Trips to Doctors

Quick update, Rowan saw the pediatrician this morning. We had to fill out 10 pages of information that the doctor needed. It helped the Dr know what Rowan is like and what his potential problems are. It asked things from birth complications, if I ever took drugs or smoked (I never did), to how he has done in school Preschool up to now, to how we discipline, to a two page checklist of behaviours we have observed. It seemed to cover everything that could be a contributor to the problem and covered info to see if there were things that could be resulting in these behaviours other than ADD. I have been doing a bunch of research about this and feel like I have a good handle on what ADD-ADHD is and what it isn't. There are sites that say that you can control it with diet, but our Dr said that if you can control it with diet, then it's not ADD. He said that all of us should be eating right, and that unhealthy eating can cause a boat load of problems, but generally there isn't anything that we should completely avoid or do any different since we lead a healthy lifestyle. He decided to prescribe a very small dose of Ritalin to see how Rowan reacts to start off. He starts his first medication tomorrow. We will see the Dr again next week. I had a meeting with Rowan's teacher this afternoon and gave them the heads up. He was very cooperative and I will be calling on Monday to see if they have noticed any changes. He was also very that we were there to communicate with him. He said that in his class the pressure is taken off the students to perform, and they are free to learn at their own pace. I was so relieved to hear that. They don't do math drills, and if they don't understand their homework and don't get it done, he takes that on saying that it was his fault then for not teaching the concepts well enough. He wishes he had had Rowan all year, to help him along and to understand him better. What a great teacher!

OK so this isn't so quick...anyway, we also had Quin's ears flushed but he still wasn't hearing very well tonight...you gotta wonder about selective hearing, it doesn't seem like he's trying to misbehave, but it is getting frustrating. We had his hearing tested almost 3 years ago, and it was fine.

Malachi has large tonsils, but that Dr said that it was most likely a adenoid problem and has referred us to a ear, nose, and throat specialist. It will be 4 to 6 weeks before we hear from them though. I suppose they get really booked up.

So Tony and I are coughing and sniffing away, and feeling like crap. Rowan said this evening that he wasn't feeling good now either. Now Quin is just about over it, and the rest of us are miserable.

You poor guys. Being sick isn;t fun. We'll keep praying for you and your family - you'll figure it all out soon enough.

On another note - 1 have one brother with ADD and one with ADHD. Danny was diagnosed with ADD at least 10 years ago and has been on medication ever since ( I think it is Ridalin, but I'm not 100% sure). He is so much better now.

Jesse was diagnosed with ADHD, but never had a few of the largest symptoms - can't keep friends, seems angry with everything, and generally miserbale. Jess is the nicest kid ever with a million friends - he just can't sit still or focus on just about anything. So my Mom never put him on medication. She just sat in his class room 2 days a week from grade 1 to grade 7 and did hours and hours of school work with him. Once he got into highschool hias grades sufferd and he was expected to focus on his own, and my Mom didn;t go to his classes anymore. He graduated last year (just barely), but just took his Level 1 Insurance course and did very well. So every kid is different, and I;m sure Rowan will be fine no matter what you decide to do. He is very loved and I know you and Tony work hard at helping him focus in life and school work. Whatever decision you make, make it for your family, not becasue the Doctor says so.

We love you guys so much and miss you terribly!

Thanx for the encouragement Amy! Right now I am doing tons of homework with Rowan, and sat in his classes too, and I just can't imagine doing that for 7 years! Way to go Amy's Mom !! That is committment. Rowan has had a hard time in the past keeping friend, but it seems to be getting better. He mostly plays with kids younger than him. We are doing our best to help him succeed in school and then in life. This avenue is one of our last resorts, but I have learned so much about ADD and realize that it shouldn't have been! He missed so much that he didn't have to if we had done this earlier. But better late than never...If this actually works that is:)

We miss you guys too! We have got to connect one of these times we come down! I'm not sure when the next time will be:) Let us know the next time you are in Kamloops!
